Frontier House

For those of you, like me, that missed the Frontier House series/experiment on PBS you can watch it here. I highly recommend it. It truly was an awesome experiment to take 3 families and send them back to 1883 on the Montana frontier. They had to built and stock their homestead and prepare for winter. To me what was the most interesting was to see the change in the men. It was as if for the first time these 3 men felt fulfilled by doing with their own hands and their own sweat and blood. The emotional attachment to what they had accomplished was evident when they had to leave and come back to the modern day, but more so at a later interview when they all felt like they were now out of place and that there was simply "too much" in the way of choices and things. The children realized this also. Anyway I encourage everyone to watch this series as it truly is eye opening into the changes that society has made since those days when surviving the winter was the year long priority. Prayer from a 3 Year old

Our 3 year old loves pistachios. Today when she got her snack of pistachios, this is what she said..."God, Amen. Thank you for these nuts." I thought it was cute enough to share and I hope that it warmed our Lord's heart as much as it did mine. Blessings from the farm, Kat

Re-thinking My Future Gardening

Well, this summer has been a bear as far as growing anything. My tomatoes have been slow, right along with the okra. The beans got eaten up and once again the squash vine borers had a field day with the yellow squash and zucchini. I have been sitting down and thinking about how I do things around here. My spring gardens always do pretty well and my fall gardens do much better as the cooler weather sees fewer bugs and temperatures are not so extreme. During the summer it is quite common for the heat index to go over 100 degrees which makes it really tough on anything but the most heat loving plants. And even those have been affected this year as evidenced by the tomatoes and the okra being slow to flower and set fruit. So my thoughts are that I will plant a minimal summer garden, certainly not even half of what I normally plant. However, fall and spring will see every available inch in the garden planted. Maybe this will help, at least it is worth a try. In order to make up for the poor production of this summer this will be the first very large fall garden I have had. I have been busy adding compost, planting, weeding and such. I still have lots of planting to do but for some things it is still too hot just yet. That is ok, as the weeding and amending are taking up quite a bit of time. Each year in the garden brings something new to learn and something new to try. I love this life!

School Time Again

Well, technically it has been school for us all year. However, my daughter has had a light load for the summer with simply reading, book reports and Grammar. It is that time of year to gear up for a full load again and a full load it will be. I don't think she quite realizes that the easy stuff is over and it is time to really buckle down. Boy is she in for a surprise! Unfortunately she is at that age that we all grow through at some point or another in which she sees school as a pointless nuisance. We all go through that stage to some degree. I was different in that I saw school as a pointless nuisance because it was a hindrance to what I wanted to learn. I got tired of teachers telling me that I wasn't ready to learn more, especially in science. While I wanted to learn more, my daughter wants to learn NOTHING! Talk about frustrating! Even now at my ripe old middle age (and that is as close as you will get to finding out how old I am!), I am always seeking new knowledge. It is as if I am as thirsty for knowledge now as I was as a child. So, having a child that does not have that thirst can be a bit difficult. I simply pray that she is retaining some of the information taught to her and that the Lord will see fit to give her the desire one day to learn more. This is probably the biggest test of patience I have ever undergone, waiting for her to get some desire to learn something! Please Lord, help her soon because I am not sure how much longer I can hold out! She is a great kid and I am so thankful that the Lord saw fit to bless us with her. A kinder soul you could not find. And truly dear Lord in Heaven I am so very thankful for the blessing of this beautiful child. I just need a little help. Thanks from your faithful servant.....the frustrated mom here at the farm.

I'm Back!

Sorry I have been away, but my modem broke down on the computer. Sooo....I had to wait for the repairman from the phone company to come and fix it. They did and now I am back. Blessings, Kat
